BioFlo PICC by AngioDynamics

AngioDynamics is not currently available in FloMedical’s product range.

This information is available for nurses, doctors and patients who have previously ordered and still use the AngioDynamics range.

Why BioFlo?

The BioFlo PICC is primarily the only PICC of its type with Endexo Technology (a permanent and non-eluting integral polymer), providing a catheter material more resistant to the accumulation of blood components such as platelets and thrombus. Endexo certainly remains present throughout the life of the catheter.

Second, located in the catheter hub, PASV is designed to automatically resist backflow, therefore reducing blood reflux that could lead to catheter-related complications. The valve automatically closes after infusion and opens for sampling of blood, however it will remain closed during normal increases in central venous pressure again reducing occlusion in the catheter.

Finally, clampless, alcohol resistant extension tubes are designed to reduce the risk of damage, promote patient comfort and reduce infection.

Printed priming volume and lumen size simplify care and maintenance.

A new advanced carbothane material offers alcohol resistance for durability and convenient care, and as a result provides a balance of flexibility and strength to ease advancement. Similarly, the carbothane promotes kink resistance to maintain flow. Minimum weekly saline flush is also recommended. This use of saline may subsequently limit the complications and cost associated with heparin use.

The Carbothane allows for large internal diameters, which are designed to provide greater flow rates at lower pressures, certainly reduce the risk of catheter occlusion and are designed for easier blood withdrawal.

Patented reverse tapered extrusion also increases kink resistance, strengthens the catheter into the hub, and the tampenade effect seals the entry tract.

The PICCs are cutting edge with ease of placement. Firstly, shorter 70cm wire for the MST delivery. Secondly, trimmable catheter tip and enhanced radiopacity. Thirdly, highly compatible with ECG tip location technology such as the Nautilus Delta.

Benefits of the BioFlo PICC

The BioFlo PICC with Endexo Technology and PASV Valve Technology

  • PASV® Valve Technology designed to automatically resist back flow and consequently reduce blood reflux on the inside of the catheter that can lead to catheter-related complications
  • Clear extension tubes allow for early visualization of blood return
  • Short reverse taper designed to staunch blood loss at insertion site
  • Alcohol resistant polyurethane material for insertion site care and catheter durability
  • Radiopaque catheter material for visualization under fluoroscopy
  • BioFlo PICC® Technology provides a catheter material more resistant to the accumulation of blood components, such as platelets and thrombus
  • Large lumen inner diameters designed to maximise flow rates, minimise risk of catheter occlusions and provide easier blood withdrawal

Features and Technical Details of the BioFlo PICC

Endexo Technology

The base polymer of the catheter material is a combination of polyurethane and a proprietary polymer compound. As a result, it is this proprietary polymer, that reduces the accumulation of platelets and thrombus adhering to the catheter shaft.

This proprietary polymer acts like a ‘non-stick’ surface throughout the catheter material, inside and out, including the cut catheter tip.

Adding the Endexo Technology polymer to the base polyurethane in the manufacturing process subsequently eliminates the need to use another form of coating to the catheter, or similarly adding other anti-bacterial agents normally associated with bacterial resistance. As a result, no heparin, no antibiotics or antimicrobials.

The Endexo Technology polymer is certainly present throughout the life of the catheter.

Most importantly, in-vitro blood loop model test results show that on average the BioFlo PICC with Endexo Technology has 87% less thrombus accumulation on its surface compared to commonly used PICCs (based on platelet count).

*The reduction in thrombus accumulation was evaluated using in-vitro and in-vivo models. Pre-clinical in-vitro and in-vivo evaluations do not necessarily predict clinical performance with respect to thrombus formation1

PASV® Valve Technology

PASV® (Pressure Activated Safety Valve) Technology is a specially designed valve to resist backflow, therefore reducing blood reflux on the inside of the catheter.

Infusion – Opens with minimal pressure, subsequently automatically closes after infusion.

Aspiration – Opens for sampling, subsequently automatically closes to resist pressure fluctuations that may cause reflux.

Closed – Remains closed during normal increases in central venous pressure, prevents reflux as a result.
